Word Processing extras: Use outlines, text boxes, drawing toolbar, picture toolbar, etc. Using desktop publishing to make a newspaper, brochure, or an ad (example) will assess the students' knowledge of various topics. Just doing a report will tempt students to copy and paste information. Be sure to assign specifics that can't be just copied.

Presentation Software Endless possibilities. Don't forget drawing toolbar. (example) Using PowerPoint to make a Jeopardy type game is another way to have students research for facts and present them in an inventive way. See ready-made Jeopardy games here: http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/res_techn/countyjeopardygames.htm

Spreadsheet extras: graphs or tables. Explore relationships of data.

Graphics ideas: using MS Paint to show symmetry or habitat around an imported picture Also point out details on a map.
