Dave's Place

This is my shop, where I spend spare time messing around with my tools and machines.  Sometimes, I actually make things here.  Some of my shop projects are listed below.

Here is a rare glimpse of the shop when it's reasonably clean:

Grizzly Mini Mill, Model G8689.  I added this to the shop in January 2001.  It is a small vertical mill/drill machine, capable of most milling operations on parts up to 4-6 inches in size.  I'll use it for making small parts to support my various hobbies.  For more information on this unit from the Grizzly Catalog, click here.

This is a very old collet lathe I've had for many years.  In January 2001, I pulled it out of storage, cleaned it up, and installed it in the new shop.  It is a Stark No. 4 lathe, made by Stark Tool Co. in Waltham, Massachusetts.  Don't know how old this one is, but these No. 4's were made from the early 1900s to the early 1950s, that makes it older than me, so it's pretty old.  My guess, this one was made in the 1930's or 1940's, but it might well have been earlier.  It's still very stable though, the bearings are solid and quiet, and it works well for my needs.  From what I've gathered, it was considered a pretty good precision lathe in its day.  If interested in this or other old lathes, check out this site.

Stark No. 4 Collet Lathe.  Includes 15 5C collets from 0.082" to 0.750", 3 and 4 jaw chucks, heavy duty drill chuck.  Now it has a small 3-phase motor with variable frequency drive.
