5th INTERNATIONAL
SHAVING COLLECTIBLES MEETING

* * * October 18-19, 2008 * * *

West Chester, Ohio, USA

The 5th International Shaving Collectibles Meeting provides a unique opportunity for you to gather with people who have similar interests. Those attending have interests in safety razors, straight razors, stroppers and hones, razor blades, blade banks, and other shaving related items. You will see in person those rare collectibles you have only read about or seen in pictures. So join your fellow collectors in an atmosphere of congeniality, sharing, and stimulating discussions.

Preliminary plans for this year are placing an emphasis on both vintage safety razors from the 50s and 60s, such as the Gillettes and Schicks, and also very old safety razors that were prevalent around the time of Gillette and before. Short presentations and exhibits will support this theme.

This is the only meeting of its kind and scope in the United States that caters to the collecting and preservation of all shaving memorabilia.

If you are new to this hobby, you will find that the seasoned collectors attending are warm and friendly and eager to share their knowledge and experiences with you. You will also find many items for sale that can be added to your collection. This is a meeting you don't want to miss.

The Cincinnati/West Chester area of the Midwest has an extended fall season with mild temperatures and beautiful foliage. It also has many attractions: cultural, sports, dining, that are typical of large, cosmopolitan cities. This year (March 12) marked the opening of the famous IKEA Home Furnishings Store, located about a quarter of a mile from the meeting site.

MEETING AGENDA

For those arriving on Friday, October 17, an informal dinner get-together will take place at a local restaurant. The formal meeting, at the beautiful Indiana Wesleyan Conference Center in West Chester, Ohio, will take place on Saturday from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm. Coffee and refreshments will be available in the morning as well as lunch and coffee/beverage breaks during the day. On Sunday morning, there will be a brunch at the Rosenthals', a short 5-10 minute drive from the meeting site.

Tables will be available in the meeting room for exhibiting, selling, or swapping of shaving items. Several short presentations during the day will feature topics of interest. And, of course, ample time will be available to talk with fellow collectors.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

The Hampton Inn Hotel, West Chester, Ohio. The hotel is located just north of Cincinnati, Ohio, near Exit 19 off of Interstate I-75. It is about 50 yards from the Indiana Wesleyan Conference Center. A block of rooms is being held until October 3, specifically for this meeting, at a special rate of $105 plus tax/night for either single or double occupancy. To receive this rate, tell the hotel receptionist (telephone 513-341-2040) when making reservations that you are attending the Shaving Collectibles Meeting at the Indiana Wesleyan Conference Center on October 18-19.

The hotel has a free hot breakfast every morning for guests, in-room refrigerator, microwave oven, free Internet access, cable TV with movie channel, and many other features. People attending last year's meeting raved about the wonderful accommodations and amenities this hotel had to offer that were included at such a reasonable price.

GETTING TO THE MEETING

If not driving, swimming, backpacking, or taking a Greyhound Bus to the meeting, flying (by plane) may be your best option. There are two airports about equidistant from the hotel: the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (CVG) International Airport and the Dayton, Ohio, International Airport. Check airfares for both airports. Many times, the Dayton airport will have significantly lower fares. The best transportation from the airport will be by rental car. Weekend rates are usually quite reasonable, depending upon size of car and rental agency.

Both hotel and conference center are located at exit 19 off of Interstate I-75, only a few miles north of Cincinnati.

Below are some unsolicited testimonials (well, maybe there was a little solicitation) about the previous meetings:

I attended the first two Shaving Collectibles Meetings and enjoyed them thoroughly. The planning was exceptional, with plenty of time to view fantastic displays and chat with collectors plus educational presentations. The hotel accommodations were excellent and a two-minute stroll to the meeting room. The pre-meeting dinner lets everyone get acquainted and renew old acquaintances, many previously only via phone or e-mail. There are many extras such as goodie bags, door prizes, and great food. And the weather is usually fine also! I forgot to mention seeing fantastic collections (and chatting with their owners), viewing razors that I had never heard of before, much less seen, and the opportunity to trade, buy and sell (I sold a few CD-ROMs and books and acquired a Ronson razor in a metal case).

I was lucky enough to attend the 1st annual Shaving Collectibles Meeting in 2004. At the event, I met some of the biggest collectors of shaving collectibles in the world and saw an unbelievable amount of amazing shaving items, some of which I have never even seen pictures of. Some of the items were so rare, that only a few are known to exist in the world. The fellow collectors were ALL very nice friendly people. To be able to talk to these people and obtain some of their knowledge on the various subjects was great. There was a wonderful show/swap event where the opportunity to purchase some very hard to find items took place. The event was very well-organized by Jerry Rosenthal, one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. Jerry has a genuine passion for this hobby that rubs off on others. Jerry and his wife were gracious enough to open their home on Sunday for a wonderful brunch get together that was attended by many. The many presentations that took place were given by some of the foremost authorities in the field. I have been able to make contacts and form relationships with many of the attendees, which is very nice. If you are interested in shaving collectibles, this event is a must attend for you!

The annual meeting of the Shaving Collectible group has completely changed my enjoyment level of my hobby. Not only is it a forum for exchanging information with like-thinking people, it is a perfect way to get into a real network for future learning and collecting.

I was able to buy some great stroppers at the meeting that I didn't have in my collection. It was wonderful meeting and talking with people in person that I only knew through email and phone calls. And I was able to see the Shave World site take shape and become a reality. I'm really looking forward to attending the meeting again this year.

Meeting arrangements were very well planned. I enjoyed meeting everyone. It was refreshing to meet people who have the same interest as I do. I was taken aback by the quality, condition, and rarity of the items on display. The hotel was great and convenient to the meeting site. The goodies were unexpected, and the door prizes were a neat idea. I look to them as future collectibles. The presentations were very informative. I took notes and learned a lot. I enjoyed the company and look forward to meeting with them again
