In 1970, President Richard Nixon decided to follow the advice of his military leaders and he sent troops into Cambodia where North Vietnam was hiding many weapons and munitions. Nixon firmly believed this move would help protect American men and women in Vietnam. Protestors, including some students on college campuses, saw this move as a widening of the war at a time when American involvement was being deescalated. Protests and riots ensued. At Kent State University, the ROTC building was burned and on May 4, 1970 four students were killed by the National Guard.
My brother, Jim, was in Vietnam at the time and he agreed that Nixon's move would help save his life. Jim wrote a letter to our mother supporting President Nixon. My mother sent the letter to the beleagured Nixon letting him know how a GI and his mother felt.
Below is a response from President Nixon expressing his appreciation
for the support. Note the date of the letter. It is exactly
3 months after the Kent State riots. Also note the personal nature of the
letter.
