Egg Rock Light
Frenchman Bay
Mt. Desert Island, Maine
Egg Island Light was placed into operation in 1875. The narrow,
rocky ledge upon which it sits is a nesting site for seabirds including
petrels, gulls and eider ducks. Originally the iron lantern
was attached directly to the eaves of the house. Later, a square
brick tower elevated the beacon. An aero-marine beacon superseded
the original fourth-order Fresnel lens when the light was automated in
1976.
Bass Harbor Head Light
Mt. Desert Island, Maine
Bass Harbor Head Light is located on the southern extremity of Mount
Desert Island. The cylindrical brick lighthouse has been used as
an aid to mariners since 1858. It was unmanned in 1974 but a Coast
Guard family still resides in the former lightkeeper's house. The
original fourth-order Fresnel lens remains in place. Its light's
focal plane lies about fifty-six feet above the water.
