From our Beach House, we drove south to Hatteras Village and took the free ferry to Ocracoke Island.

While traveling to Ocracoke Island, we passed a ferry that was heading to Hatteras Island.
That little strip of land is Ocracoke Island.

This lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing the steps.  We weren't allowed inside the fencing.

Ocracoke Light (1803 and 1823)
The first Ocracoke Lighthouse went up in 1803, the same year the original Cape Hatteras tower was completed.  It stood on Shell Castle Island, where British colonial forces cornered and killed the notorious pirate Blackbeard early in the eighteenth century.  Lightning destroyed the lighthouse in 1818.  The existing 65 foot conical brick tower near Ocracoke Village was completed in 1823.  Automated in 1955, the Ocracoke Lighthouse displays a fixed white light with a focal plane about 75 feet above high water that can be seen from 14 miles away.
