The Akita is originally from Japan. They were bread by the aristocracy of the Akita Prefecture to be used in hunting bear. The Japanese Yazo bear is a 400 pound bear that the Akita used to track and corner. The Akita is known for its loyalty.

The greatest story of the loyalty of the Akita is that of Hachi-Ko. Hachi-Ko was the dog of a professor at Toyko university. Every morning the professor would walk with his dog to the train station. Every afternoon Hachi-Ko was waiting for the professor to return from work. Unfortunately, when Hachi-Ko was less than two the professor had a fatal heart attack at work and never returned. Despite being given to relatives, Hachi-Ko returned to the train station every day for the rest of his life waiting for the professor to return home.

The Akita was first introduced to the United States by Helen Keller. She was on a speaking tour of Japan when she heard the story of Hachi-Ko. Upon hearing of her facination with this story, a local policeman gave her a puppy. This puppy's name was Kamikazi-Go.

Our Akita's do not have a history such as these, but they are of the same bread as Hachi-Ko and Kamikazi-Go. Kelev is a 10 year old fawn colored Akita. She was born on May 7, 1995. She came from Tammy Crawford, a breader in Carollton, Kentucky. Inu is a 5 year old brown Pinto with a split mask. He was born on February 27, 2000. Inu comes from Namika Akitas in Defiance, Ohio.

 

In August of 2005, we borrowed a friends cabin on Lake Webster in Indiana. This was their first time boating. They had a fantastic time. Of course Inu wanted nothing more than to jump out of the boat into the water, while Kelev enjoyed the lake from the dry confines of the boat.

 

In the May of 2005 we took our yearly vacation to the Hocking Hill region of Ohio. This is a gorgeous area with lots of hiking trails. The dogs absolutely love being there. They love doing all the hiking along the main trails.
