Exactly 1 year to the day after the much lamented breakup of "The Gabriel Hounds" Brian McCoy, Terry Blankenship & Eddie Cotter Jnr. , (all former "Gabriel Hounds") formed a new trio as "The Kells"
The Kells were together for about a year and a half and released one official CD together called "Feast of the Archangels", which was produced by Terry Blankenship, with cover art by Coni. They also put out two limited edition collectors CDs taken from our rehearsals called: "Collector's Edition Vol 1 & 2".
Eddie eventually quit the band, and Brian and Terry carried on for a while as a duo.
Brian McCoy - flute,
penny whistle, low whistle, uilleann pipes
Terry Blankenship - bouzouki, mandola, mandolin, guitar,
vocals
Eddie Cotter Jnr. - bodhran
Special thanks to Jason Reese who was in charge of our sound system at live performances. He was a great help to the band.
Footnote*
After a weekend trip to Chicago that Brian had made with a female guitarist / vocalist from Columbus (who had recently converted to Catholicism), the flute player Brian McCoy came back and said that "God" had told him that he should only be playing Christian praise music and that he was quitting the band to play Christian music with her. He also said that in the future he would only be playing music with other Catholic musicians. (Terry was a Baptist ).
So the original band broke up and Brian and Terry gave each other their personal "word of honor" that neither of them would play, record, or perform on stage with any band that that had the name "Kells" in it, unless both of them were in that band together; and that when the original run of the CD's and t-shirts ran out that no more would be produced or sold.
Terry kept his promise,
but apparently Brian hasn't. Brian ended up re-forming "The
Kells" sometime later with the very same woman he'd taken
the trip to Chicago with. They are playing Celtic music, (not
strictly Christian praise music like had God supposedly told him
to do). They are all three Catholics though. So much for Christian
values, apparently keeping ones word doesn't count. As John Lennon
said "How do you sleep at night".
