USGP Memories: Indianapolis

- John Votapek: Indianapolis, 2000
- What a great race. My wife and I really liked seeing and meeting persons from all walks of life.
We also got this idea. Although we liked the race very much, we thought it might provide an opportunity
to exchange a home with a family from Europe. We live about 5 miles from the track in Indianapolis. We'd
really like to visit the country of Italy. Contact if interested: doublejv@yahoo.com

- Dave O'Rourke: Indianapolis, 2000
- I have two amazing memories from the USGP in 2000.
First, after qualifying on Saturday, they had the historic grand prix car parade, which was amazing to see. It was incredible to see all these cars, which I had only seen in pictures, actually on the track in front of me. After the parade was over, my two friends and I walked back to where the cars were on display. They were behind some ropes, under a tent, and the general public were only allowed to look, not touch. I went up to a security guy and asked him if my friends and I could come inside the tent, promising we wouldn't disturb anything. Much to my surprise, he agreed to let us in. The next 45 minutes was like some bizarre, waking race fan's dream. Walking right up to the '72 McLaren, the JPS Lotus, the ground-effects Williams from the early eighties — it was amazing. We got to touch the cars, look inside them, and take pictures with them. I had a picture taken of myself next to Gilles Villeneuve's Ferrari.
My second memory is less improbable, but just as memorable. As the cars rolled off the grid for the parade lap, I looked down into the Northwest Vista, and the grandstands were absolutely blazing with flashbulbs as the cars entered Turn One. 250,000 people, it was really an incredible sight.
